Description
1 and 2 Hill Square in Edinburgh are early 19th-century Classical tenements that rise four storeys above a basement. The building features a 15-bay facade on Hill Square and an 8-bay section facing Hill Place. It is constructed from squared and coursed, droved sandstone, with chamfered rusticated ashlar at the ground level and rubble at the rear. The entrance has stepped platts that overhang the basement, and there are band courses above the basement and ground levels, a cill course at the fourth storey, and a cornice. The windows have raised cills, and the ground level on Hill Place has round-arched openings. The entrance doors are six-panel timber with rectangular fanlights above, featuring a margined glazing pattern.
The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some blind windows on Hill Place. It is topped with a coped gable and ridge stacks, and the roof is covered with grey slates.
Inside, as of 2007, the original floor plans for the flats are mostly intact, with some simple cornicing. There have been alterations to the ground floor of numbers 3-10 to create office spaces. A linking corridor connects to the Surgeon's Hall from the north elevation of numbers 6 and 7. The second storey of numbers 7 and 8 contains museum rooms for the Surgeon's Hall museum, with one room featuring piers and a coffered, coved ceiling.
At the street elevation to the east and south (Hill Square), there is low coping topped with decorative iron railings that have pineapple finials.
