Description

This building, located at 1 and 1A Middleby Street in Edinburgh, dates from around 1817 and consists of a pair of symmetrical classical houses that are two stories high with a basement. The houses feature a single-storey wing (1A) attached to the east. They are constructed from cream sandstone polished ashlar, with rustication at the ground level and rubble on the east and rear sides. Architectural details include a base course, a string course at the ground floor, a dividing band course, a cill course, corniced architraves, and cast iron window guards with palmette and anthemion patterns on the first-floor windows. The design is completed with a cornice and a blocking course.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there are steps leading to round-arched doorways in the two central bays, featuring panelled doors and umbrella fanlights. Engaged Tuscan columns frame the doorways. Above, there are single windows on the first floor, while the outer left and right sides have single windows set in round-arched panels at the ground floor, with corresponding single windows above. The single-storey wing to the east has two bays, with a modern door on the outer right and a single window to the left.

The east elevation, facing Dalkeith Road, has three bays and a single-storey wing at ground level, with regular fenestration on the first floor above. The windows are made of plate glass and timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with corniced and coped wallhead stacks and octagonal moulded cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is also enclosed by low droved and coped boundary walls along the street, with a pedestrian gate adjacent to the house on the west side.
