Description

3 Marlborough Street in Edinburgh is an earlier 19th century building that has undergone later alterations and is subdivided into three houses: No 3 on the ground floor, No 7 on the first floor above, and No 5, which is a two-storey house. The structure features a pair of classical houses that are two storeys tall and have five bays. The exterior is made of stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, while the side and rear elevations are composed of blank rubble. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, and quoin strips.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, the doorways are closely spaced towards the center. No 3 has a panelled door, while No 5 features a glazed aluminium door, both topped with plate glass fanlights. There is a window above the doors, and the outer bays have windows, except for the penultimate bay on the right, which is blinded.

The northwest (rear) elevation is not fully visible as of 1994, but it includes an external staircase leading to No 3, which serves as the entrance to No 7. No 3 has 4-pane timber sash and case windows, while No 5 has modern aluminium windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped ashlar skews at the gablehead, with stacks made of ashlar for No 3 and brick for No 5. The building retains delicate cast-iron gutter brackets and the original gutter.

The interior was not seen in 1994, but it is noted that shutters are in place in No 3. The boundary walls are rendered with coping at the front and made of rubble with coping on the sides.
