Description

The stables at Norton House Hotel in Edinburgh were built around 1843 and feature a near-symmetrical U-plan design with Tudor details. Originally constructed for stabling horses, they have been converted into a restaurant since 1992. The building is made of squared, coursed whinstone with cream sandstone dressings and margins, while the side and rear elevations are finished in snecked whinstone rubble. It has a base-course and gabled dormerheads, with a two-storey main range oriented east-west, flanked by lower ranges that enclose a courtyard.

On the south elevation, the main block has three bays that are concentrated towards the center. There are three doors at ground level, with a window on either side of the outer bays. The doors are modern wooden panelled, and there is a modern canopy over the center door, along with light fittings between the center and end bays. The first floor features dormer-headed windows, with modern lights in the gablet. The lower ranges on the left and right are single storey with attics, extending at right angles. The left gable has two round-headed slits at ground level and a segmental-headed window in the loft. The original coach bays on the return have been glazed with French windows. The right gable has two doors at ground level, which are now glazed to windows, and a segmental-headed window in the loft. The stables are built against the wall of a walled garden, and there is a modern harled addition at the rear.

All windows are modern hardwood with four-pane casement glazing, and the former coach arches and doors have also been glazed. The roof is covered with grey slate and features tall corniced wallhead, ridge, and apex stacks with circular cans. The skews and skewputts are finished with ashlar coping.
