Description
5 Craigendoran Avenue in Helensburgh is a terrace of six villas, built in 1897, consisting of single-storey and attic structures that create a uniform appearance. The villas are constructed from cream snecked bull-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings. They feature ashlar mullioned windows, shaped ashlar margins around the windows, overhanging eaves supported by brackets, bargeboards, and finial-topped gable ends.
On the east elevation facing Craigendoran Avenue, numbers 6 and 7 are a pair of symmetrical villas located at the center of the terrace. They have two semi-circular arched doorways with decorative patera surrounds and fanlit two-leaf doors. Above, a gable dormer with a bipartite window breaks the eaves, and there is an apex stack. A date stone is positioned at the gablehead. To the right, there is a steeply pitched gabled bay with a canted window at the ground level, a piended slate roof, and a bipartite window on the first floor. The left side is a mirror image of this design.
Numbers 4 and 5, located on the outer right, also form a symmetrical pair. They feature a gabled bay in the center with two shouldered-arch doorways, rendered architraves with incised decoration, and fanlit two-leaf doors. Above, there is a bipartite window on the first floor. To the right at ground level, a bowed tripartite window has a swept roof and deep eaves, while above, a shallow tripartite bowed window is set back and topped with a conical roof. The left side mirrors this design.
Numbers 8 and 9 are identical to numbers 4 and 5. The villas predominantly have plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, rendered and lined corniced chimney stacks, and original rainwater goods.
The boundary wall features low garden walls with semi-circular coping, plain iron bar railings, and gates, although some walls have been raised and railings removed.
