Description

Eadar Glinn Eventide Home is an Italianate villa dating from 1892, designed by Alexander Shairp. It is located on Drummore Road, Oban. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a prominent three-storey square entrance tower situated in the re-entrant angle, and a substantial addition to the rear constructed after the Second World War. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced, squared and snecked grey granite, with dressings in stugged yellow sandstone with droved arrises. A base course and roll-moulded window surrounds with chamfered cills are present.

The north (principal) elevation features three bays. The first bay is advanced and gabled, containing a canted three-light window with corniced eaves at ground level. A bipartite window is located at the first floor, with a shield date stone set into the gablehead above. The central tower is three-storey high, with windows on the north and west faces. A ground-floor entrance door, approached by stone steps, faces north. Round-arched bipartite windows are found at the second floor, with a string course intersecting at the impost, displaying architraved surrounds to the arches and a keystone at the centre. A bipartite window is located at ground floor level in the third bay, with a window above, breaking the eaves with a gabled dormerhead.

The east elevation is three bays wide, with modern windows inserted between the bays at ground floor level. The first bay at ground level is blank, while the first and second bays are gabled.

The west elevation presents as four bays. The ground floor contains an infilled doorway in the second bay and a window in the third bay, offset slightly to the right. On the first floor, there are no windows in the first and fourth bays, with a modern loggia fronting the second to fourth bays.

The south elevation is largely obscured by the modern addition, except for a single bay at the eastern end.

The original openings have plate glass timber sash and case windows, incorporating internal brass sash lifts. The entrance door is six-panelled, with a floral cast-iron door knob and a letter-box fanlight above. The roof is grey slate, including a pyramidal roof for the tower, with oversailing eaves featuring plain timber bargeboards on the gables and exposed rafter ends. Gabled dormerheads have finials that break the eaves above the windows. Curved timber brackets support the eaves of the tower and a cast-iron weathervane is positioned at the apex. Radial cast-iron ventilators are present in the west wall, with others along the base course. Cast-iron gutters, profiled at the tower, and square downpipes with decorative brackets are also present. Stone ashlar stacks feature heavy copes and octagonal cans.

The interior retains an ornate timber staircase.
