Description
The building is a free church located on High Street in Bowmore, Islay, and is believed to have been designed by Campbell Douglas of Glasgow, constructed in 1860. It sits on a previously undeveloped site at the edge of the 18th century planned town.
Architecturally, the church is designed in the Gothic style and features a rectangular plan with four bays and a gabled roof. A striking rose window is positioned in the south gable above a low, asymmetrically placed vestry, while a gabled porch is located near the north end of the east flank wall. The flanks are adorned with lancet windows. The building is constructed of rubble with imported ashlar dressings, and it includes polychrome rubble detailing around the arches and the encircling rose window. The church retains its early glazing pattern and has slate roofs.
Inside, the church features an open-timbered roof supported by arched braces on stone corbels. The original fixed seating was removed, likely in the 1950s, and the space has since been converted into a hall.
The church is enclosed by a rubble-built perimeter wall that includes simple gatepiers, also constructed of rubble.
