Well House, Bealach An Fhuarain, Inveraray Castle Estate

Well House, located at Bealach An Fhuarain on the Inveraray Castle Estate, is a Classical structure attributed to William Adam, built between 1747 and 1748, with a gate added in 1803. The well-house has a roughly square plan and is set into the hillside. It features droved chlorite schist ashlar masonry, complemented by polished and vermiculated dressings, a deep plinth, and an eaves course. The principal elevation faces southeast and includes a broad, round-arched opening with channelled, vermiculated voussoirs, topped by a blocked pediment with a ball finial. Inside, the barrel-vaulted space contains a basin carved from the rocky outcrop and has a paved floor with a serpentine overflow channel. The stone slab roof adds to its character. The walls display 18th century incised graffiti, including a date of 1757.
