Description
16-18 Burnside Street in Campbeltown is an early 19th-century, three-storey, six-bay tenement with a rectangular plan. The main front is cement-rendered and painted, featuring ashlar dressings, while the side and rear elevations are roughcast. It has an eaves course and projecting cills at the windows.
The southeast front is regularly fenestrated and symmetrical, except at the ground level. The entrance door is located in the second bay and is framed by a classical doorpiece with pilasters and an entablature. There is a segmental-arched pend in the fourth bay. Between the fifth and sixth bays, there are paired entrance doors (with the left door infilled) and flanking shop windows that have curved cills and lintels.
The northwest rear elevation is also six-bay and symmetrical, except at the ground level. It features apsidal stair towers in the second and fifth bays, along with vertically-boarded additions at the inner re-entrant angles. Most openings have modern glazing, except for the shop windows which have 16-pane fixed-lights, and the stair towers which retain 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and is continuous over the stair towers and adjacent rear additions. There are cast-iron gutters and downpipes, and roughcast, coped multi-flue apex stacks with various circular cans at the gables and central ridge. The skew copes at the southeast pitch of the northeast gable have been removed.
