Hazelbank, Kilchattan Bay, Bute

Ashgrove is a pair of late 19th century houses, built around 1880, located in Kilchattan Bay, Bute. These two-storey, two-bay gabled houses form a symmetrical four-bay block, with a recessed center. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked stugged red sandstone, featuring red sandstone ashlar dressings. Notable elements include a raised, polished base course, corniced bowed windows at the ground level, and overhanging timber bracketed eaves. The building has raised quoins and raised long and short surrounds for the first-floor openings, with sandstone mullions and chamfered cills.

The entrance features a two-bay arcaded cast-iron columnar porch and a decorative cast-iron balcony, complemented by cast-iron brattishing that showcases stylised anthemion motifs. The sides of the building are finished with harl-pointed red rubble sandstone.

On the northeast (entrance) elevation, there are steps leading to round-arched, two-leaf timber panelled doors, which are centered at the ground level. The advanced arcaded porch sits beneath a first-floor balcony that spans the central bays. Round-arched windows are set in square-headed surrounds on the first floor, aligned above the porch. The ground level features three-light bowed windows in slightly advanced bays on the outer left and right, topped with cast-iron brattishing, while the first floor has tripartite windows and anthemion-finialed boarded timber gables.

The windows throughout are two-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. Corniced apex stacks are located at the northwest and southeast corners, with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is enclosed by a low coped sandstone boundary wall, which features corniced square-plan sandstone piers flanking the pedestrian entrances, characterized by heavy coursing and pyramidal caps.
