Description
The property comprises a house and associated stables and outbuildings, dating from 1834, with a mid-19th century billiard room addition to the south (before 1865). The house is a two-storey, asymmetrical, gabled Tudor-Gothic villa of a rambling plan. It is rendered with painted sandstone margins and quoin strips, featuring ornamental bargeboards, chamfered reveals, and Tudor hoodmoulds.
The north (entrance) elevation is asymmetrical, with a prominent central gable, a canted bay window at ground level, and a bipartite window above. A Tudor-arched doorway, framed by moulded pink sandstone and a hoodmould, is positioned in a bay to the right of the ground floor. Fixed 12-pane glazing features in a first floor window to the outer right, with a smaller fixed 9-pane window to the left of the doorway. There are M-gabled bays to the left, the rightmost being narrower, both with tripartite windows at ground level and bipartites at first. A curtain wall to the outer left incorporates a blind window with a hoodmould and connects to a rubble wall.
The west (garden) elevation consists of three stepped gables of the original house, running from north to south, alongside a single-storey block with a window to the far right. The outer left bay showcases a tripartite window with a hoodmould at ground level, a bipartite window at first floor, and a roundel in the gablehead. A lower gable to the right features a full-height, five-light canted window. A slightly advanced gable displays a full-height projecting window and strapwork frieze between the ground and first floors. A tall single-storey block to the outer left has a five-light canted window and a half-piend roof with a finial.
The south elevation has a bargeboarded gable and a circa 1920s quadripartite window at ground level, with sandstone margins, alongside a modern door to the outer right. A jettied chimney breast is situated at the apex, but without a visible stack.
The east (rear) elevation is asymmetrical, with a three-bay block projecting to the left, incorporating a lean-to porch and a first floor window at centre. A three-bay wing extends behind, featuring a bipartite window at the inner first floor. The rear of the extended single-storey block is visible to the far left.
The windows are plate glass sash and case, and the roof is grey slate with lead flashings. Groups of three diamond-set stacks, mounted on pedestal bases, rise from the ridge and wallhead, each topped with a circular can.
A balustrade runs along the south side of the house, punctuated by dies, with a central die capped by an urn on a swan-neck pediment base.
The stables and outbuildings are arranged in a long rectangular block to the east of the house, with an advanced gable at the north end. The stable block is constructed of rubble, harl-pointed, with sandstone chamfered margins, stugged quoins, and some alterations. The main range consists of five blocks of three bays, with a central door flanked by windows and a dormerheaded window above. Two blocks have been altered, and the end gable incorporates a forestair. Dormerheaded windows feature 12-lying-pane glazing, while ground floor windows have 12-pane sash and case. A grey slate roof with lead flashings completes the structure.
A rectangular, four-bay, gabled former kennel block, aligned northeast-southwest, features pointed arched doorways in two bays to the left, and a door and window in the bays to the right, together with bargeboards.
