Description

Balegreggan House and its stables were built in 1861, with a substantial rear wing added around 1900. The main house is a two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical structure with a rectangular footprint, accompanied by a two-storey wing that projects to the rear which was formerly stables. The principal south elevation features polished ashlar dressings and a base of stugged ashlar roughcast, while the side and rear elevations, along with the wing, are finished in roughcast. A chamfered band course runs above a base course, and a cill course is present at the first floor, with another band at the eaves. The windows are margined with projecting cills.

The south elevation has stone steps leading to the entrance door, which is framed by a pilastered stone doorpiece and an entablature. The door has six panels, with glazing in the upper sections and a plate glass fanlight above. An inner panelled door features nine panes of leaded stained glass at the top. A two-storey, three-light canted window is situated to the right, separated by a cornice. Bipartite windows are present on the ground and first floors to the left. The west elevation has windows on both the ground and first floors to the outer left. The east elevation features windows on the ground and first floors to the outer right, and a first-floor window to the outer left. The north (rear) elevation showcases a round-arched stair window with a smaller window below, centred on the elevation, and narrow windows on the ground and first floors to the left. The rear wing is advanced towards the outer right.

The wing’s side elevations are three-bayed; the east elevation has a door and two windows closely spaced in the left bay, with a modern lean-to conservatory on the right. The west elevation presents roughcast timber oriels with bipartite windows in each bay at the first floor, and additional windows on the ground and first floor towards the outer right.

Most windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, with some featuring four or six panes. The stair window contains stained leaded glass depicting a peacock. The main block has grey slate piended roofs with overhanging, bracketted timber eaves and a platform. The wing has overhanging eaves with exposed rafter ends. Decorative cast-iron gutters and downpipes with brackets and hoppers are also present. Roughcast wallhead stacks are visible at the side elevations of the main block, corniced and surmounted by a variety of cans. The wing has a slated, roughcast chimney-gable with a three-flue stack, and a roughcast coped three-flue ridge stack.

A random rubble boundary wall, built up with brick at the wallhead and capped with concrete, runs diagonally to the northwest of the house. The wallhead curves downward, terminating in a ball finial at the southwest end.

Inside, many original features survive, along with some alterations from around 1900, including Art Nouveau glasswork and a fireplace in a room on the west side of the house.
