Description
Stonefield Castle Hotel, located in the Stonefield Estate, was built in 1837 and designed by William Playfair. This Scots Baronial style building has an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys and attics. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features gabled slate roofs. Notable architectural elements include crowsteps, a crenellated tower, and corner turrets topped with conical roofs, as well as gargoyles.
The southwest end of the building has a moulded doorway that is accessed by a balustraded staircase. Above the doorway is a flamboyant cartouche displaying the monogram BM/AG, and a square panel with the date "1837," which is flanked by carvings of a galleon and a boar's head. The northeast elevation features a bay window, and there is a one-storey and attic wing with pedimented dormers.
