Description

This is a mid-19th century house with additions dating to the early 20th century, likely designed by A.N. Paterson. The house is asymmetrical with a prominent drum tower on the west side, facing the garden. The exterior is painted harl with sandstone margins and dressings, featuring a base course and a band course. Window reveals are chamfered.

The southwest (garden) elevation has three bays, defined by symmetrically placed gabled dormerheads, with an imposing bastion tower on the far left. The ground-floor windows are arranged asymmetrically, incorporating a bipartite window on the right and a five-light bowed window in the center, positioned between two dormerheaded windows. There are also skylights.

The corner tower, likely dating to the early 20th century and by A.N. Paterson, features a canted base and four transomed and mullioned windows on the ground floor, with a roll-moulding detail. The tower's facade is harled where it meets the main block. It corbels to a round shape at the first floor, with three windows centrally positioned. A broad sandstone blocking course is topped by a conical slate roof and an elaborate wrought-iron finial.

The southeast (entrance) elevation presents a four-bay main block with a single-story canted projection on the right. A porch entrance is recessed in the re-entrant angle, supported by a diagonal buttress on the left. Stone steps lead to the gabled porch, which has a pointed arch doorway and a two-leaf boarded door with cast-iron hinges. A canted bay, also from the early 20th century, extends to the right, with windows on the first three facets; the remaining sides are blank. There is a conical roof terminating in a finial. The outer left has a broad gable with a pointed arch doorway (reveals are stop-chamfered) leading to a boarded door, and a window at the first floor. Three dormerheads are symmetrically located to the right, with a replacement window immediately to the left of the porch.

The northwest elevation consists of a four-bay block of the main house and a single-story wing to the left. The tower is on the far right, with three dormerheads to the left, and one centrally positioned to the left of the tower. A canted bay is situated on the right, between the dormerheads, with a window to the far left. To the left is a three-bay, asymmetrical, single-story service block.

The northeast elevation shows the main house’s M-gable, with a single-story block projecting to the left and another projecting to the right. A lean-to roof bridges over the entrance door. A bipartite stair window is off-centre to the right of the left gable.

The windows are primarily sash and case with two-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes. Those in the tower have six-pane upper sashes with plate glass sash and case lower panes. The single-story service wing has eight-pane sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate with lead flashings, saw-tooth skews, ashlar coping to the skews, and moulded skewputts.

The interior was not inspected in 1993.

The boundary wall comprises rubble construction with harl pointing, topped with semi-circular coping. The squat gate piers feature a base course, stop-chamfered arrises, and pyramidal caps.
