Description
The Hardware Stores at 15-17 Longrow in Campbeltown is an early 19th-century, three-storey, two-bay symmetrical tenement located at the northern end of a terrace. The main front is smooth rendered and painted, while the northern gable and rear elevation are roughcast.
The building features a base course and a central entrance door flanked by rectangular shop windows. The outer left end of the principal front is slightly set back, with a shopfront cornice that overlaps with the adjacent building, and there is a partially chamfered corner leading to a pend on the right. The northern elevation has projecting cills and droved ashlar margins.
On the northwest side elevation, there is a two-bay gable end with windows located at the ground and first floors in the center and outer left, along with a small square window in the gablehead to the right of center. The southwest rear elevation has a projecting apsidal stair tower.
The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with 2-pane plate glass shopfront windows. The first floor has modern windows, while the second floor of the gable has 12-pane timber sash and case windows that match the glazing on the rear elevation. The shopfront has two-leaf timber wide-boarded storm doors and a two-leaf panelled inner door with round-arched glazed uppers. There is also a six-panel flush-beaded timber door leading to the stair tower. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes cast-iron rooflights, a profiled gutter returned at the northern elevation, and a cast-iron downpipe with a decorative hopper. Broad roughcast multi-flue apex stacks are coped with circular cans, featuring a mutual stack on the south side and dressed margins at the corners of the northern stack, along with skew copes.
