Description
South Lodge and its gatepiers date from 1868 and were designed by John Burnett. The lodge is a single-story building with an attic, taking the form of an L-shaped plan with gabled elevations. It is constructed primarily from pink sandstone and whinstone rubble, with a cream sandstone facing to the main elevation – though this is now partly rendered and lined – featuring ashlar dressings. Details include a base course, stop-chamfered arrises, overhanging eaves supported by brackets, and bargeboarded gables.
The east (entrance) elevation features an advanced gabled bay to the right, containing a tripartite window at ground level. A baluster column, set on an ashlar base, supports the left angle of the bay and forms a porch in the re-entrant angle. The porch lintel exhibits a cable moulding. A flat-arched doorway is positioned alongside a window in the re-entrant angle. A continuous hoodmould extends over the porch entrance and the tripartite window, culminating in a carved panel at the centre. A window is located at the centre of the gable, along with a window at ground level on the return to the right of the advanced bay, and a window on the left wing.
The north side elevation displays an attic window within its gable, and the gable apex features decorative bargeboards with a carved panel. On the south elevation, a window is present at ground level, accompanied by an attic window in the gable. The windows are boarded. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are corniced sandstone stacks.
The gatepiers consist of four square-plan ashlar piers, each topped with tall pyramidal caps and featuring a wide frieze. A pedestrian entrance is located to the left.
The lodge was in a dilapidated condition in 1995. Kilmahew House, of which the lodge was part, was demolished in 1995 following fire damage. Saint Peter’s College is listed separately.
