Methilfield, 77 James Street, Helensburgh

Methilfield is a later 19th-century villa located at 77 James Street in Helensburgh. This two-storey, two-bay building features a single-storey entrance block that is recessed to the right (east) and includes a porch in the re-entrant angle, showcasing classical details. The exterior is constructed from squared and coursed cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, and it has a base course, a lintel/eaves course, bracketted overhanging eaves, and chamfered arrises around the windows.

On the south (entrance) elevation, the recessed block to the right has a decorative timber porch in the re-entrant angle, with a window flanking it to the right. The columnar porch has paired brackets supporting the cornice and features an openwork parapet with angle dies. The main block is advanced to the left and includes an advanced tripartite window with a parapet to the right at ground level, and a corniced bipartite window to the left. There are two symmetrically disposed windows on the first floor.

The villa has plate glass sash and case windows and a piended grey slate roof, with rendered and coped end stacks and moulded cans. The interior has not been seen.
