Description

10, 12, and 14 George Street in Montrose is a paired terrace of tenements built around 1890. The buildings are two stories with an attic on the left and three stories on the right, featuring shops at ground level. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble and brick. Architectural details include a string course above the ground floor, cill courses on the first and second floors, and an eaves cornice. The roofs have curvilinear and Dutch dormers, and wallhead gables, with chamfered margins. The ground floor has basket-arched openings, and the first-floor segmental-arched windows are adorned with hoodmoulds, except for the oriel windows.

On the northeast elevation, the left section is two stories and has three bays. It features a central doorway with a rectangular fanlight that has multi-pane glazing and a six-panel door. The flanking bays have a 19th-century shopfront with a central recessed doorway and plate glass windows with low stall risers; the left window has multi-pane upper lights. The first floor has pilaster-mullioned bipartite windows at the center, with corbelled oriels rising into piend-roofed canted dormers. Above the center, there is a pilaster-mullioned wallhead dormer with a curvilinear gable and an ornate corbelled octagonal finial.

The three-story section to the right also has 19th-century shopfronts at ground level, featuring two doorways with plain fanlights and glazed doors, flanked by plate glass windows with low stall risers on the left. The doorway is offset to the right and has a rectangular fanlight and a six-panel door. There is another shopfront to the right with a plate glass window and low stall riser, along with a recessed doorway to the left. The upper stories consist of three bays; the center bay has a window on the first floor and an ogee-gabled window on the second floor with a finial. The left bay features a stone-mullioned bipartite window on the first floor and a pilaster-mullioned, ogee-gabled window on the second floor, which has three dies and a finial at the apex. The right bay has a canted oriel window that extends from the first floor to the second floor, topped with a dormered roof.

The northwest elevation shows the gable end of a former internal wall from a demolished building. The southeast elevation adjoins the George Hotel. The buildings have timber sash and case windows, along with plate glass. The roofs are pitched with grey slate, and the stone skews have corbelled and gabletted skewputts. Broad brick stacks with cornices are present on the gableheads and at the center of the party wall. Decorative rainwater hoppers and gutter fixtures complete the exterior.
