Description
Ythan Lodge is a former toll-house built in 1835, featuring a single storey and attic with an apsidal projection to the south, creating an approximate T-plan. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar with droved and chamfered margins and steeply battered cills.
On the south elevation, the central apsidal projection has four windows, and to the left is a shallow four-centred arch doorway, which was once a porch but now has modern glazing and a door. To the right, there is a single bay set back, featuring a pilastered and corniced doorpiece in the re-entrant angle with a modern door above which is a dormer addition.
The east elevation shows the apsidal projection on the left and a gable end on the right. There is a window at ground level to the right, a blocked window to the left, and a window in the gablehead at the center.
The north elevation has a large, shouldered stack at the center with a flue projecting at ground level. To the right, there is a window and door, and a lean-to structure.
On the west elevation, the apsidal projection on the right has a shallow four-centred arch that was once a porch but is now glazed. The gable end on the left has a window to the left and right at ground level, with a window in the center of the gablehead.
The building features modern glazing and has graded grey slate roofs, stone skews, and scroll skewputts. It includes small brick gablehead stacks, a rendered ridge stack, and an ashlar wallhead stack.
An ancillary structure to the north is a former stable, which is a single storey gable-ended building. It has a large sliding door to the west, two doors and a window to the east, a door in the south gable end, and a blocked opening to the north. The stable has a grey slate pitched roof with stone skews and skewputts. There is a low coped boundary wall to the south and east, with a later coped wall to the east between the house and stables.
