Description

Montrose Airfield, Building 47 is a group of three detached military aircraft sheds, or hangars, built between 1913 and 1914 for the Royal Flying Corps as part of the former Montrose Air Station. The sheds are rectangular in shape and arranged in a crescent layout facing east, with a symmetrical design featuring pitched roofs and gabled elevations at both the north and south ends. They are constructed with timber frames set on a base of concrete and brick, and are clad in corrugated metal. Each shed's east elevation has a pair of gables, each featuring four timber-panelled sliding access doors. The cladding of sheds 46 and 47 is covered by later 20th-century secondary steel cladding, and the access doors for these two sheds have been altered and reduced in size.

There is a single-storey timber-clad lean-to attached to the south elevation of the southern shed (No. 48), which was added later and is not included in the listing. The interior of No. 48 was inspected in 2017 and is open plan, divided into two sections by a red brick wall, likely a later addition, as similar structures like those at Farnborough do not have this feature. The interior finishes are simple, with a smooth concrete floor, painted and rendered walls, and later ceiling tiles. The exposed triangular timber roof trusses have diagonal cross-bracing, vertical iron tension rods, and diagonal webbing. Low-level late-20th-century partitions have also been added to the south elevation of No. 48, which are not of interest for listing purposes.

It is noted that the timber extension on the south side of Building 48 is excluded from the listing under Section 1 (4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.
