Description

This early 19th century building comprises two connected structures at the corner of Murray Street in Montrose. The front of the building is constructed of ashlar stone and lined render, while the rear is of rubble stone. It rises to three and four storeys. A base course is present, with a cornice above the ground floor and a deep eaves cornice. Pilastraded shopfronts feature prominently.

The eastern elevation, which fronts Murray Street, shows a gable end re-faced with stucco to resemble stugged ashlar on the first three floors. A quoined end is visible to the right. The ground floor has a five-bay pilastered shopfront with a door to the right, flanked by windows, and two windows to the left, one of which is blinded. The first floor is symmetrical with a blocked window to the left and blinded windows to the centre. The second floor features blinded windows to the left and centre, with paired windows in the asymmetrical gablehead. The rear block, facing a close behind 122-126 Murray Street, has a door and window at ground floor, with a single bay projecting to the left, which contains a door at ground level.

The northern elevation shows a single bay with a door at ground level at the end of the close and a two-bay advanced rear block to the right.

The western elevation has a single bay to the left with a door and boarded window at ground level. Beside this is a semi-circular stairtower with a blocked doorway and a corbel above the lintel. A single bay returns to the right with a round-arch entrance, a pilastered doorpiece, and decorative glazing to the fanlight, above which are windows on the first and second floors. To the right is the front block, with lined render at ground level, a blocked round-arch doorway, a single window at first floor, and two windows at both first and second floors, with a pend at ground level to the right.

The southern elevation mirrors the eastern elevation with a five-bay pilastered shopfront at ground floor, a door set off to the right, a window to the right, and two windows to the left. Lined render finishes the first and second floors, which are arranged over four bays, and symmetrical, with a rounded corner to the right as a single bay, featuring a window at ground level and blinded windows at first and second floors.

The windows are a mix of timber sash and case, with 12-pane glazing to the first floor, 18-pane to the stairtower, and plate glass or 12-pane elsewhere. The roof is covered in grey slate, with twin ashlar gablehead stacks to the east and west, a broad and tall brick stack to the north of the front block, and a rubble stone and brick stack to the east of the rear block.

Inside, a spiral staircase is contained within the stairtower and features a cast-iron banister. A corniced doorpiece with a recessed panelled door leads to apartment No. 4 on the second floor. Unusual hinges are present on the sashes of the staircase, and several fielded panel doors remain in the dental surgery on the first floor.

Coped rubble stone boundary walls are present to the north and west.
