Description
This is a single-arch road bridge built in 1831 by Charles Landale and Matthias Dunn. Originally spanning the Dundee and Newtyle Railway, it is constructed from rubble with bull-faced voussoirs and large rubble coping stones. The bridge features a round-headed arch and parapets that splay outwards toward the approaches.
The arch itself has been partially filled in and is now used as a garden shed. The Dundee and Newtyle Railway, opened in 1831, was the earliest railway track in Scotland and the first to carry passengers, and operated in conjunction with the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway. The section of line from Rose Mill to Auchterhouse was re-aligned in 1860, bypassing Balbeuchley and Pitpointie, meaning the bridge ceased to be used by trains.
