Description
The Ice House at Glamis Castle was rebuilt in 1866, incorporating elements from the late 17th century. It is located by the Glamis Burn and features a tunnel that leads to a domed underground chamber. The structure is made of brick, ashlar, and rubble. It has a pointed-arch doorway that is 5 feet high and 3 feet wide, with heavy masonry voussoirs and a dressed keystone. The entrance passage measures 14 feet long, 5 feet 9 inches wide, and 7 feet 4 inches high, with rubble walls and a stone slab roof; the first slab is incised with the letter 'P'. The ovate chamber has a diameter of 18 feet at its widest point and is 23 feet deep from the center of the brick dome, which springs from the ashlar floor level. The tunnel access to the domed chamber may date back to the late 18th century.
