Description
Town and County Hall in Forfar was designed by James Playfair and built between 1785 and 1788. This two-storey building features a four-window ashlar front facing Cross, with the central two windows topped by pediments. The ground floor openings are arched, while those above are square-headed and were originally framed with architraves and cornices. The rest of the building is constructed from rubble, and the northern wall has four segmental arches that were originally used for a weigh-house and butter market. The roof is piend and platformed. Internal alterations were made in 1847 by William Scott. A clock from 1804 is present, and a bellcote was demolished in 1879.
