Description
West Cottage, part of Damside Cottages, dates from 1822 and has been altered at the rear. This early, single-storey pair of cottages is prominently located on the main road from Forfar to Friockheim. They feature Gothic-arched openings and have dated skewputts on the front elevation. The building is constructed of ashlar with a deep base course and raised cills, while the sides and rear are made of squared rubble and dry dash.
The symmetrical front elevation faces south and includes a central door flanked by windows on either side of a ridge stack. The deep skewputts have relief carvings showing the date '18' on the outer left and '22' on the outer right.
The principal elevation has timber windows with decorative astragals. The windows on East Damside retain sash and case openings, while those on West Damside have pivot openings. The roofing is non-traditional, featuring brick stacks with thackstanes and broad skews with deep block skewputts.
