Description
This is a gardener's house, probably largely built in 1791, forming part of a symmetrical arrangement of gates and lodges. The site includes plain circular gate piers constructed of ashlar stone, with rubble screen walls enclosing flanking lodges. The lodges are single-storey structures with simple tripartite windows and broad, piended roofs. Original sash windows are present. Rubble walls extend to the north and south, with a wall to the south connecting to Gannochy Bridge incorporating a moulded footgate, likely reused from another location. A public shelter, open on all sides and featuring a pitched roof covered in stone slates, stands to the north. Its front is supported by two columns and features a gable with a pediment.
The gardener’s cottage itself is built of rubble, originally a single storey. It has two windows and a central Venetian door set within a slightly projecting central bay featuring a bracketed cornice. The roof is piended and was raised in the early 19th century, with the addition of two piended dormers containing four-pane sashes. The roof is covered in slate. Cameron’s “Fettercairn” includes an illustration on page 123.
