Description
Aswanley House is a two-storey, L-shaped house likely dating from 1692 or slightly before. The initials “G.C.” (George Calder) and “I.S.” (Isobel Skene) along with the date 1692 are inscribed on stones that are no longer in their original locations. A circular stair tower projects from the north side; it originally had a slated roof, but this has been replaced with an ogee felt covering. A scale and platt stair was later inserted, likely in the mid-18th century, within the re-entrant angle of the L-shape. The exterior is harled, with most window and door openings having modern rendered margins. The original openings feature simple chamfer detailing. The building has straight skews with skew-puts, and coped chimneys. Internally, one room on the first floor dates to the mid-18th century, while the remainder of the house has been altered.
A small section of the east range remains, along with a low, dry-dyked garden wall on the west side. Adjacent to the east is a small, partly demolished office building, which appears to have belonged to an outer court. The original slated roof is depicted in illustrations.
