Description

The Walled Garden with Summer House at Fetteresso Castle dates from the late 18th century and features a two-chamber, near-U-plan layout. It is surrounded by a tall holly hedge to the south, with an early 19th century summerhouse included in the design. The structure is built of random rubble with rubble coping and has tooled long and short dressings at the gateways.

In the north chamber, there are timber lean-to glasshouses in the northeast corner, although much of the glass is missing, the framework remains intact. To the right, there is a broad gateway with a modern boarded timber gate, and a boarded-up gateway to the northwest. A vertically boarded timber potting shed is located at the center of the southeast wall, along with a small brick boiler house attached to the outer wall at the northeast.

The south chamber features a dividing wall that is supported by modern concrete buttresses to the east. There is a modern timber lean-to in the northeast corner, with a gateway under a canopy to the right that has a panelled timber door. Additional gateways include one to the south of the east wall and another with a panelled timber door to the north of the west wall. The summerhouse is situated at the center of the north wall, flanked on the right by a boarded timber gate and a boarded gateway with modern concrete gatepiers. There are also two boarded-up gateways on the left.

The summerhouse itself is constructed of random sandstone rubble with lightly droved dressings and features pointed-arched openings and overhanging eaves. The center has a boarded timber door, flanked by paired windows, although some glass is missing. The right and left returns of the summerhouse are blank. It has a red pantiled roof, which is missing on the east side, and a boarded timber-lined interior. The garden is enclosed by a low rubble wall with near-flat coping.
