Description
Fetteresso Castle is a substantial, three-storey mansion house of 1808, built by John Paterson. It incorporates elements of a castle rebuilt in 1671, though the mansion was dismantled in 1954 and now exists as a roofless ruin. The building presents a picturesque appearance with numerous towers and turrets, and battlements. It is constructed of roughly squared rubble with polished ashlar dressings, arranged in a roughly L-shaped plan with a service court in the re-entrant angle. A large, octagonal entrance tower is located at the east side, featuring a projecting, buttressed porch and a pointed arched entrance. Various intermediate turrets are located along the long elevations, some enclosing staircases. The windows vary, some are hood-moulded, and some are bipartite. String courses run along the wallhead, continuing across the towers, and are topped by battlements. Ranges connect the angle tower to the first tower on the north and south sides. Illustrations detailing the castle’s appearance prior to its dismantlement in 1954 exist, and a plan is held by the Scottish National Monuments Record.
