Description
West Pier, located at the Harbour in Pennan, was constructed in 1854 for the eastern pier and between 1903 and 1904 for the western pier, designed by engineer James Barron, on an earlier harbour site. The structure is made of tooled square rubble with some concrete dressings and facings.
The eastern pier was extended in 1909 by engineer Mr. Stevenson from Edinburgh and projects straight out into the sea. The western pier is shaped like a shallow U-plan, with the two piers meeting to form the harbour entrance, which encloses a polygonal basin that faces the shoreline to the south. The seaward face of each pier is raised as a seawall to protect the quayside, and a shallow concrete slipway extends from the shore.
