Description
John Smith 1817 and 1844; William Kelly addition and alterations 1927. 2-storey and basement Classical mansion house (now hotel) comprised of original 5-bay south-facing core with 1844 advanced 2-bay bow to the left and later 19th century advanced 2-bay, crowstepped gable to right. Granite ashlar with coursed squared rubble basement to additions and west elevation. String course between floors of additions. Deep eaves course and blocking course above. Hung-slate attic to central 1817 section. Steps oversailing basement to entrance door at centre of south elevation. West elevation comprised of 3 bay section to right with slightly advanced pedimented, centre bay and pedimented entrance porch to left. Basket-arched entrance to porch. Armorial panel, dated 1817 and 1844 set in pediment. Pair of tripartite windows to right of east elevation.
12-pane and 18-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Pitched, slate roof. Corniced, ashlar stacks with clay cans.
The interior was seen in 2013. Fine classical scheme of 1817, 1844 and 1927, characterised by decorative plaster ceilings and well-detailed timber work, including door and window surrounds and staircases. The dining room has semi-circular ends with curved mahogany doors set with bracketed and corniced door frame, deep reeded skirting board, decorative cornice and ceiling rose. The drawing room (1927) is reminiscent of a shooting lodge with walls lined in brown varnished timber boarding and a timber compartment ceiling, and marble and timber fire surround.
FORMER STABLES: (at 69567 99580) U-plan former stable block (converted to accommodation in 1986) comprised of 2-storey, red granite range to south and single storey grey granite ranges to rear. Roughly squared and coursed granite. Shouldered gables with chamfered, ashlar copes. Segmental-arched openings with later glazing. Square openings at 1st floor set closed to eaves. Forestair at rear of south range. Predominantly timber, casement windows. Slate, pitch roof. Wallhead stack to west gable of 2-storey range.
GATEPIERS AND QUADRANT WALLS: (at NO 69400 99041) square-plan gatepiers linked by coped quadrant rules. Gatepiers to centre with moulded pyramidal caps.
PAIR OF PILLARS: (at NO 69467 99411) circa 1840, square-plan granite pillars with rusticated base and bands.
