Description
The dovecote at Byth House dates from the early 19th century and is a tall square structure built of tooled red sandstone rubble, featuring similar ashlar dressings. It has a doorway on the south elevation, above which there is a group of six round-headed flight-holes made from a single sandstone block, accompanied by an alighting ledge that encircles the dovecote. The roof is double-pitched and slated, with timber boarded gables on the north and south sides and a stone ridge.
Inside, the dovecote is regularly lined with 248 stone nesting boxes that start approximately 60 centimeters (2 feet) above the ground floor. There is also evidence of a later inserted ceiling.
