Description
Lower North Water Bridge is an important structure designed by architects and engineers John Smeaton, John Adam, and Andrew Barrie of Montrose, built between 1770 and 1775. The bridge features seven segmental river arches with spans of 62 feet, 55 feet, 46 feet, and 40 feet, supported by cutwaters. The spandrels of the central arch are adorned with keyblocked circles, and the bridge is constructed from ashlar stone. The northern approach is made of long pinned rubble and includes a flood arch. A tablet at the southern approach commemorates the construction and includes a panel about the annexed estates.
