Description
This is a U-plan steading, likely dating to 1828, situated west of the manse in Kirktown of Clatt. It is a single-storey building with a loft space beneath the eaves. The steading is constructed of squared granite rubble with granite pinnings, and features ashlar skews. It has a pitched slate roof, with a piend roof to the rear (north). A masonry ball finial sits atop the south-facing gable on the west side. Below the finial is a vehicular entrance, and a tall, rectangular loft opening is in the gablehead. The east gable appears similar. Vertically-boarded doors are found throughout the building. On the south courtyard elevation, there is a pair of pedestrian and stable doors with split, vertically-boarded doors. A vehicular opening with a vertically-boarded door on a sliding track has been inserted into the west elevation. A window on the west courtyard elevation has six fixed panes above a timber panel; this glazing is not original. The New Statistical Account of Scotland, volume XII, for Aberdeenshire, notes that the “offices,” which were associated with the manse, were rebuilt on an enlarged plan in 1828.
