Description

Kennethmont Parish Church is an 1812 building of simple gothic design, constructed as a rectangular plan. The church features a four-window south wall, a doorway flanked by a window, and a fluted square bellcote above the east gable. The north wall is blind. The exterior is of coursed rubble, with a harl finish, and has been recently cement pointed on the north and east walls; original glazing remains. The interior was recast in 1910 by G. Bennet Mitchell, who removed a horseshoe-shaped gallery. Notable features include a Leith-Hay pew and mural tablets. A bell from Mears and Stainbank was installed in 1910. The church is an ecclesiastical building and remains in use as such. Historical records and publications, including Leith Hay and Lochhead, Trustie to the End, indicate the building was constructed between 1811 and 1813 at a cost of £795, with an original capacity of 550 people. Plans by Bennet Mitchell are archived at Register House. A Kilgour bell, dating from 1689, is located in the vestry.
