Description
Mains of Shiels is a 2-storey T-plan main house dated 1742, featuring a 5-window front made of ashlar granite. The door has a transom for a fanlight, and the openings are chamfered. The first floor is taller than the ground floor. The back of the house is constructed from rubble with cherry cocking and has two swept dormers. The roof has a marked bell-cast, and the chimneys are topped with ogee copes.
Inside, there is a granite stair leading to a half landing, with wood above, and the first-floor rooms are panelled. There is also a single-storey outbuilding, which is likely older than the main house. This outbuilding features a large arched hearth with ingle seats and a choose press. Additionally, there is a large walled garden attached to the property.
