Description
Kemnay Parish Church is an ecclesiastical building constructed between 1844 and 1845 by James Henderson, with an addition made in 1871 by James Matthews. Further alterations occurred in 1900 and a large north window and general remodelling were undertaken in 1928 by A. Marshall Mackenzie. The church is of a T-plan design and is built from plain rubble, featuring canted north and south gables. A bellcote is situated at the south end, and the north side has a window with basket tracery. Dormer windows are incorporated into the roof, and a gallery is present within. A session house is located on the west side. The church’s bell was cast by A. Lawson of Old Aberdeen in 1788.
The church is currently in use for its original purpose. While some old stones are present in the adjacent churchyard, they are of little significance. Approximately £2,305 was spent on renovations following the First World War. Records relating to the construction and alterations, including contracts published in the Aberdeen Journal in 1844 and 1871, heritors' records, and an account book (though lacking accounts for the 1920s work), are available.
