Description
The Governor's House at Oakbank Approved School on Mid Stocket Road in Aberdeen is a two-storey, asymmetrical cottage-style house designed by Jenkins and Marr in 1915. It features mock timber-framing and is connected by a corridor to the northern wing of the main school building. The exterior is constructed from coursed Aberdeen bond granite with contrasting light grey dressings, and includes a base course, projecting cills, pitched roofs, and overhanging eaves.
On the east elevation, the central projecting gabled section has a full-height canted window that is enlarged and corbelled, finished with painted harl at the first floor. The gablehead displays a painted diamond pattern timber effect. To the right, there is a single-storey bay with a small window and painted timbering above, while the left side features a porch formed by the pitch of the roof, with a painted timber effect panel and a timber trellis adjacent. A single window at the first floor is set back under a flat roof. The corridor connecting to the main building is located to the left.
The north elevation includes a single-storey section on the left with a swept roof, small window, and dormer above. To the right is a gabled section with a timber-mullioned bipartite window at ground level on the left, a small window to the right, and a five-light stone-mullioned window at the first floor beneath a jettied and harled gablehead.
On the west elevation, there is a single-storey wing at the rear, featuring a canted bay to the right, two windows to the left (one of which was formerly a door), and a four-panel door with a rectangular fanlight to the left.
The south elevation is two-storeys high and has a four-light stone-mullioned window at the first floor under a jettied and harled gablehead. The windows are timber-framed casements with plate glass glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slate and feature two ridge stacks (one shouldered) at the intersection of the roofs in the centre, and one ridge stack on the west wing. The eaves overhang with exposed rafter ends, and the bargeboards are decorated with nailhead detailing. The interior was not seen in 1998.
