Description

Alford Place Church, located at 2-3 Alford Place in Aberdeen, is an early to mid 19th century building that underwent remodeling, including the addition of a Library and Museum to the north by Matthews and Mackenzie in 1887, with John Morgan as the builder. The structure is a single storey with a basement and attic, featuring a 3-bay former library. It is constructed of granite ashlar with chamfered reveals and includes a base course, Tudor-arched openings with decorative tracery, a decorative eaves cornice topped with a crenellated parapet, and gableted dormers with decoratively pierced bargeboarding.

The south elevation is symmetrical, with stone steps flanked by railings leading to a central doorway on the ground floor. This doorway features a panelled timber door flanked by glazed panels and topped with a fanlight. Moulded granite shafts rise to the eaves cornice from decorative dripstones, with 3-light windows in the flanking bays. The basement floor has regular fenestration, and the attic floor includes 3-light gableted dormers on either side.

The west and east elevations are obscured by adjoining terraces. The north elevation features a long library added by Matthews and Mackenzie in 1887, with a canted end that is advanced. Each facet of the canted bays has a 3-light pointed-arched window, while the left and right returns at ground floor are blank. The attic has 7 gableted clerestory windows with cusped tracery and iron ventilators at the ridge.

The building predominantly has leaded, traceried windows and a grey slate roof with a tiled ridge to the south and a lead ridge for the library. A coped granite gablehead stack features both circular and octagonal cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, there is a long entrance hall with decoratively boarded panelling, panelled doors with decorative architraves, and stained glass in the principal doors. The ceiling is boarded timber with decoratively moulded coffering. Additionally, there is a boarded timber rib-vaulted ceiling punctuated by clerestory windows with decoratively carved brackets and pierced circular ventilators at the apex.

The property is enclosed by a low granite wall to the south, which surrounds the basement and is topped with railings.
