Description

This building, located at 1 Alford Place in Aberdeen, is a bank constructed in the mid to late 19th century. It is made of coursed grey granite ashlar and features dividing band courses, cill courses on the first and second floors, an eaves course, an eaves blocking course, and rectangular dormers on the attic floor.

The north elevation facing Alford Place is nearly symmetrical with four bays. The ground floor has four shop windows framed by pilasters, while the first and second floors have regular window arrangements. The attic floor includes three dormers. The outer left corner has a chamfered angle with a Tuscan columned doorway that features a two-leaf gate, a modern glazed door, and a decorative fanlight. Above this, there are three-light canted windows on the first and second floors, and a balustraded parapet tops the building, with the roofline stepping up to the attic floor where a tripartite window is located. The outer right corner has a curved angle with a modern glazed door at the ground floor and regular fenestration on the upper floors.

The northwest elevation has irregular window arrangements, with a harled addition that extends to the right. The southwest elevation is obscured by an adjoining building. The southeast elevation, which faces Holburn Street, is asymmetrical and has a four-bay block on the right side, with shop windows on the ground floor and regular fenestration on the upper floors.

The building predominantly features two-pane timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate mansard roof with lead ridges, and there are corniced wallhead and ridge stacks with circular cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The ground floor has been refurbished for use as a bank, while the remainder of the interior had not been seen since 2000.
