Description

476 Union Street in Aberdeen is a former cistern, now converted into a tenement, originally designed by John Smith in 1830 and reconstructed around 1900. The building is four stories high and has three bays, constructed from coursed granite ashlar. The ground floor features channelled rustication, while the first, second, and third floors have bipartite windows. A band course is present on the third floor, along with a projecting cornice above the cill level, and there is an eaves cornice with a blocking course.

The southeast elevation is nearly symmetrical, with a four-light window at the center of the ground floor, flanked by advanced doorways that contain two-leaf panelled timber doors topped with tall letterbox fanlights. To the right of the ground floor is a modern shop front, and to the left is a five-light window. The first and second floors are flanked by two pairs of giant pilasters that rise to break the eaves, with a block pediment situated between them. The fenestration is regular across the first, second, and third floors.

The northeast and southwest elevations are obscured by adjoining terraces, and the northwest elevation was not visible in 2000. The building features two-pane timber sash and case windows, and while the roof material was not seen in 2000, it has coped stone skews and gablehead stacks with octagonal cans. The interior was also not seen in 2000.
