Staff Home, Woodend General Hospital, Aberdeen

The Staff Home at Woodend General Hospital in Aberdeen was built around 1936 to 1939, designed by Alexander R Gardner, the City Architect, to house 130 nurses. This large three-storey building features an unusual plan with south-facing and east-facing sections that form a T-plan arrangement, creating a large open courtyard at the front. The design includes vertical entrance bays and moulded eaves that suggest a flat roof, while a pitched roof rises behind. The windows are primarily plate glass sash and case. The outer wings of the east-facing courtyard are single storey. Rainwater pipes are positioned at intervals beside the east entrance. Inside, there are attractive finishes with extensive use of plain timber panelling.
