Description

Built circa 1936-9, to design of Alexander R Gardner, the City Architect, to accommodate 130 nurses. Staff Home, superceding original nurses home at south west of complex.Large 3-sorey block with plain unusual plan south facing and east-facing ranges (which adjoin in T-plan arrangement) each treated as centre of a U-plan large open courtyard front, with vertical centre entrance bays; moulded eaves as if for a flat roof, pitched roof rises behind. Glazing mostly plate glass sash and case. Outer wings of east-facing court are single storey. Rhone pipes set at intervals flank east entrance. Handsome interior finishes, extensive use of plain timber panelling
