Description

The Main Building of Woodend General Hospital in Aberdeen is part of a hospital complex that was originally the Oldmill Poor House. It was designed by Brown and Watt in 1901 and opened for inmates in May 1907. Over the years, additional buildings have been added, including a Nurses Home from the 1930s. Most of the structures are made of granite and feature slated roofs, with much of the original glazing, some of which is decorative.

The Main Building has a large, symmetrical south front with a distinctive water tower set back from the center. The central section is three stories high and has a U-shaped front with two-story canted windows in the advanced outer gables. The inner part has three bays with openings recessed behind an arcade at the ground level, while the windows above are topped with pediments. This central range was designed to house the poorhouse, administration offices, and a dining hall at the rear, which could also serve as a function room and includes a gallery at one end, along with kitchens.

The wings on either side contain the men's and women's wards, which are simpler in design, two stories tall, and feature a series of projecting gables with large windows. Parts of the ground floor are covered by verandahs, and there are slated, ogee-domed circular pavilions at the outer corners. The ground floor windows are mostly bipartite, with single windows above on the first floor, which are primarily small-paned sash and case windows combined with top-hoppers, a characteristic feature of some hospital buildings that allows for varying air flow depending on the weather.

At the rear, there are a series of plain wings and stair windows, with a children's ward adjoining the rear of the female wing. The forecourt area is defined by an iron-railed boundary wall, which includes a pair of identical octagonal open shelters or lodges with conical roofs. The original approach to the hospital was from the south via a long avenue, although the main entrance is now located on the north side.
