Description
The Northern Hotel, located at 1 Great Northern Road in Aberdeen, was designed by A G R Mackenzie of A Marshall Mackenzie & Son and completed in 1938. This purpose-built hotel features 47 bedrooms and is situated on a corner site, showcasing art deco details. The building is four stories tall and constructed from reinforced concrete, with squared granite facing, a finely tooled plinth, and exposed concrete cills, lintels, and balconies. Its V-shaped plan includes a bold curved angle.
The main entrance on Great Northern Road is cantilevered and canopied, with several subsidiary entrances. A continuous balcony runs along the first floor, while the second floor features a balcony only at the curved angle. All windows on each elevation have continuous cills and lintels, with granite dividing piers and metal frames that display a horizontal glazing pattern. The building is topped with a parapet.
Inside, the ground floor has undergone significant alterations, though some original details remain in a small dining room. The first floor includes an anti-room leading to the ballroom, which features an art deco canopy. The ballroom itself has a super-cinema style, characterized by its flowing curvilinear shape, bold curved cornices that conceal lighting, and a ceiling with various planes, along with a dais recess.
