Description

22-26 School Hill in Aberdeen is a three-storey and attic building, constructed around 1886 by James Mathews and Alexander Marshall Mackenzie. This 11-bay range features a Classical style with Scots Baronial detailing, set on a gently sloping site. The design is balanced by a near-symmetrical arrangement of crowstepped gables that rise at the central and outer bays. The exterior is made of stugged granite ashlar with finely tooled, chamfered openings. The ground floor accommodates shops, while the second floor has a stepped cill course, a moulded blocking course, and a shallow, castelated cornice.

The second floor and attic include corbelled-out, stone-roofed shallow canted oriels with tripartite windows, along with crowstepped gables topped with rose and thistle finials. The remaining eight bays feature tripartite 'candle-snuffer' capped dormers. The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows throughout, a grey slate roof with lead flashing on the ridge and dormer caps, broad corniced ashlar stacks, and clay cans. Recessed cast iron rainwater goods are also present.

Inside, there is a dog-leg stair with a cast-iron banister and timber handrail leading to a communal inner stair. The interior retains some original fireplaces, which are currently boxed in at the first-floor commercial premises as of 2006.
