Description

Blairmore Pier is a hammerhead plan pier made of timber pile construction, located in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It plays an important role in the development of the Holy Loch and the western shore of Loch Long. The piers at Blairmore, Strone, and Kilmun supported steamer traffic, making it possible for people to commute to Glasgow. As a result, the pier is central to the village of Blairmore.

The original pier was built in 1855, designed by engineer G. Smith. This structure appears to be largely the same as the original, although it underwent significant improvements in 1873, which included extending the pier head to nearly double its original width and length. The design was inspired by a pier built in Kirn in 1845, which featured a break in the middle for a cattle ramp, although no remnants of this ramp remain today. The pier consists of timber piles and cross-bracing, with a timber boarded deck and timber railings, likely added in the 20th century. A small timber boarded building, also from the later 20th century, sits on the pierhead, as earlier photographs show different structures in that location. Regular traffic to Blairmore ceased in 1971. The materials used in the construction include timber piles, a timber deck, and timber railings.
