Railway arch, off Rocks Chapel Road, Lisnamore, Crossgar, Co Down

This is the possible site of a railway arch, located along a lane to the east of Rocks Chapel Road, approximately one mile south of Crossgar in the townland of Lisnamore, County Down. The arch was likely built around 1856 as part of the former Belfast & County Down Railway line, designed by Sir John MacNeill and constructed by Patrick Moore, to carry the railway over a country lane. In 1978, the structure was described as a single elliptical arch constructed of rubble basalt with sandstone voussoirs, fielded bosses, and a string course at road level. However, there are now no discernible remains of the arch itself. The railway line, which ran between Crossgar and Downpatrick, closed in 1950. Historic maps from 1860, 1901, and 1920 held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) detail the railway's route. The site is of industrial archaeological interest, although the structure is now demolished and not formally listed.
