Description

Cargagh House is a one and a half storey farm house dating from perhaps around 1850, with a large two storey return. The property is located on the east side of Cargagh Road, approximately 1.5 miles south of Crossgar.

The front façade faces roughly west and is symmetrical. At the centre is a PVC door screen set within a large elliptical arch opening. To the left and right are two relatively large windows with modern frames. The south gable has a single window to the upper floor, as does the north gable. To the rear there is a large two storey gabled return. The north façade of the return has a glazed door and two windows to the ground floor and two windows to the first floor. The gable of the return has a large window to each floor. The south façade of the return has two windows to the ground floor and one to the first floor. The exposed left hand portion of the rear façade of the main section has a door and window, while the exposed right hand portion has a much larger window.

The front façade and gables of the main section are finished in pebbledash render with smooth cement bands to the openings and wall edges. The remainder of the building is finished in plain painted render. The roof of the main front section has natural slate to the front and asbestos to the rear. The return roof is also covered in asbestos slate. Both sections have roof overhangs. There is a Velux window to the rear of the roof of the main section. The main section has four rendered chimney stacks, at least one of which is a dummy. The return roof has a single rendered stack. All windows have modern PVC frames and the rainwater goods are PVC.

The building shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map may have been slightly longer than the current house, according to the 1836 valuation returns, when it was owned by a Mrs Brown. The 1859-60 Ordnance Survey map shows a structure of similar shape to the present building. Given the formality of the front façade, the current house probably dates from the mid 19th century, though much of the fabric of the pre-1834 house may have remained in place. The 1863 valuation records James Hutton as the owner. In the 1880s the property was acquired by Dr James Carlisle, who remained there until around 1917, when Cargagh House was bought by the present owner's family. The building appears to have been substantially renovated by Dr Carlisle and retained much of its late 19th and early 20th century detailing until the 1980s, when the property was comprehensively modernised. The building was completely renovated in the 1980s and now sports PVC window frames and doors throughout.
