Description
This is a substantial, relatively plain, two-storey farmhouse dating to 1886, exhibiting a slight Regency influence. It is situated to the east of the Downpatrick Road, approximately 1.5 miles southeast of Crossgar.
The front facade faces west and presents a symmetrical design. A central panelled timber door is flanked by margin-paned sidelights with apron panels, all topped with an elliptical fanlight featuring 'spoke' tracery. Sash windows with horizontal and vertical glazing bars (6/6) are positioned on either side of the door, and three similar windows are found on the first floor. The north facade features two ground-floor and two first-floor windows, mirroring the front facade, with a wall extending from the far left side. The south facade is similar to the north, but without the wall. The rear facade has a glazed door slightly right of centre, topped with a plain fanlight. To the left of the door is an enlarged window with a modern frame; to its left is an inscribed panel reading 'This farmstead erected at W Hughes’s expense 1886'. To the right of the door is a window matching those on the front facade, with three similar windows above. The entire facade is covered in painted lined render. The hipped roof is covered in natural slate, and two central chimney stacks, rendered and ‘side on’, rise from the roof, each topped with four matching chimney pots. The building features metal rainwater goods.
As indicated by a plaque on the rear wall, the house was built in 1886 "at W Hughes's expense." It replaced a long, single-storey dwelling noted in the 1838 valuation returns as the home of one William Bingham and marked on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map as 'Moor Cottage'.
