Description

The site on South Promenade, near Newcastle harbour, formerly contained a public toilet, likely constructed around 1925. It was probably built by the Newcastle Urban District Council. The toilet was made of decorated cast iron panels set between slim cylindrical supports. The upper panel had ventilation perforations and was topped by a small decorative cornice featuring lion masks. It had a glazed roof with a raised centre. The structure was removed in the early 1990s and is now demolished. Valuation town plans from 1908 to 1935, held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) VAL/12E/111/3/1-4, provide some context.
